Robert Franklin (Frank) Ziegenfuss, Class of 1968, was President of the Norview High School Alumni and Friends Association for over 20 years and was a charter member of the organization.
Robert Franklin Ziegenfuss, 73, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2023, with his high school sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Mindy, by his side. Frank was born on June 23, 1950, to the late David Howard Ziegenfuss and the late Odessa Irene Jones Ziegenfuss. He was also predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Larson. Frank retired in 2011 after thirty-eight years from the Chesapeake Public School system as a teacher, coach, and school administrator.
Frank was a proud graduate of Norview High School, class of 1968. He attended Old Dominion University where in 1973, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education. He also obtained his Master of Art in Urban Education from Norfolk State University in 1989.
Frank loved sports, especially football. He was a season ticket holder for both the Old Dominion University Football and Basketball programs. This year he was able to attend two ODU football games before his brief illness. Frank was the past president of the Southeastern District Coaches Association. He was also a member of the Chesapeake Sports Club where he served on the Legends Committee.
One of his true passions was the Norview High School Alumni and Friends Association where he served as president for many years. Frank was a charter member of this group and very proud of the many scholarships that have been awarded to deserving Norview graduates. Retirement gave Frank the opportunity to have lunch once a month with his “old fraternity brothers,” play golf and travel throughout the world. He loved to get in the car and drive, especially to Raleigh, NC, and the Outer Banks.
Frank is survived by his wife, Mindy Elling Ziegenfuss; his son, Robert Christopher Ziegenfuss and his wife, Amanda; his daughter, Melissa Ziegenfuss Clark and her husband, Patrick, and the loves of his life, his grandchildren, Logan and Leighton Clark. Frank had a special relationship with his brother-in-law, Randy Elling and his wife, Betsy. Frank was also blessed to have a wonderful extended family of many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He cherished his friends that encompassed his childhood in Ballentine, his years at Norview Junior High and High school, his Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers, and his golf travel buddies. Finally, he was blessed with many local friends who he held dear to his heart and valued as if they were family.
A Celebration of Frank’s life will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Great Bridge Baptist Church, Chesapeake, Virginia. A reception shall follow in the church social hall.
Memorial Donations can be made to Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation at www.CPSEF.com or to the Norview High School Alumni and Friends Association, c/o Rick West, 5220 Sharon Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23464.
